Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi. At the foot of Mount Fuji, this city has accumulated a long history as one of Japan’s textile regions. Kai silk, linings, neckwear, interior textiles, and apparel fabrics. The applications have changed with time, yet the ability to handle fine yarns, weave dense structures, and control the way light sinks into cloth remains embedded in the area.

Even at the height of the region’s production, mills specialising in apparel fabric were never the majority. Those capable of producing cloth for luxury brands were fewer still. TSUGUO belongs to that narrow lineage.

The company’s fabrics have been used by international fashion houses including LANVIN, Yohji Yamamoto, and ISSEY MIYAKE. The important point is not the names themselves, but why such houses needed fabric from a small mill in this city.

The answer is not found only on the finished surface of the cloth. It lies in a chain of decisions: preparing the yarn, rewinding it, setting the warp, punching cards, translating information into jacquard and dobby movement, weaving the cloth, and inspecting the finished roll. TSUGUO’s value exists inside that sequence.

CHAP.01

THE ROOM

Before reading the details, one has to read the room

Entering TSUGUO, the first thing one notices is not a single machine, but the distance between machines. Looms, inspection equipment, cones of yarn, punch cards, sample racks. This is not a modern line in which each process is isolated. It is one room where decisions from yarn to cloth remain connected.

The equipment here is not displayed as nostalgia. It is not simply machinery for speed, volume, or uniformity. It is a set of tools for reading difficult yarns, complex structures, surface tension, and the final expression of apparel fabric.

The reason to visit a place like this is not romance for the old. It is because knowledge that could not be preserved by efficiency alone still exists here as an active process.

CHAP.02

THE ARCHIVE

A fabric archive is a design resource for the next cloth

Inside the mill, a large number of fabric samples remain. They are not merely references for colour and pattern. Each cloth carries information: yarn, density, structure, handle, use, and memory of production.

For a mill specialising in apparel fabric, an archive is not a shelf for nostalgia. It is a search system for future design. Which yarn should be used? How dense should the construction be? Which structure will make light sink, and which will create tension on the surface? The possibilities of future cloth are folded into these records.

As textile regions contract, this kind of record rarely appears in numbers. But in the field of apparel fabric, one cloth woven in the past can become the reference point for the next development. It is material, memory, and map at the same time.

THE FABRIC BEGINS WITH A CONE

Cloth begins not at the loom, but in the condition of the yarn

When visiting a weaving mill in Fujiyoshida, the loom naturally attracts attention. The sound, vibration, movement, and the moment cloth appears. But at TSUGUO, the more important point begins slightly before that.

Raw silk and fine-count delicate yarns cannot always be sent directly to the loom. Winding memory, broken ends, hairiness, and uneven tension can all appear later on the surface of the fabric. What luxury brands require is not only a distinctive pattern. They require a stable surface, predictable quality, and a quiet tension within the cloth.

For that reason, TSUGUO rewinds yarn when necessary. A winder transfers yarn onto another bobbin or cone in order to prepare it for weaving. It is not a simple act of moving yarn from one place to another. It adjusts the path, firmness, and tension of the yarn, reducing problems before the weaving stage begins.

This process is invisible once the cloth becomes a garment. Yet in high-grade apparel fabric, this invisible preparation can be decisive. Cloth is already being controlled before it is woven.

TECHNICAL NOTE: A winder prepares yarn for weaving by rewinding it into a suitable condition. With fine-count yarns or raw silk, winding firmness, tension, hairiness, and the risk of breakage can affect the final fabric.

CHAP.04

ANALOG DECISION

Analog is not backward; it is a format for retaining judgement

At TSUGUO, punch cards and the machine used to create them remain on site. A punch card is physical design data: the presence or absence of holes controls the lifting movement of warp yarns.

This is not nostalgia. For mass production, digitisation and speed are rational. But for small-lot, complex apparel fabrics, where the behaviour of the yarn has to be read and adjusted, an analog format can preserve judgement.

Holes are punched. Cards are suspended. Yarn movement is observed. The woven result is checked. Each step keeps design and production connected.

CHAP.05

THREAD / WARP / TENSION

The movement of yarn determines the expression of cloth

Woven fabric is formed by the crossing of warp and weft. Warp yarns run lengthwise from the back of the loom toward the front. Weft yarns pass across them, then are beaten into place by the reed.

Cloth does not appear simply because yarns cross. The warp must be prepared in the required number, length, and density, and it must travel through the loom under stable tension. If this stage is unstable, distortion, pattern misalignment, and weaving faults can appear in the fabric.

The cords and lifting system above the jacquard mechanism receive information from the punch cards and control the movement of the warp. Before a pattern is seen as decoration, it first exists as the movement of yarn.

TECHNICAL NOTE: Warp yarns run lengthwise through the loom. Weft yarns pass across them. The warp opens, the weft enters, and the reed beats it into place. This repeated action forms woven cloth.

CHAP.06

THE MACHINE IS NOT THE STORY

The point is not the machine name, but what the machine makes possible

Inside the mill, there are dobby mechanisms made by Yamada Dobby, and machines carrying a KASHU nameplate. But the machine name itself is not the story.

A dobby mechanism controls groups of warp yarns to create small patterns and variation structures. A jacquard mechanism allows finer control of warp movement, making more complex patterns possible in woven form.

What happens inside these machines is not decoration. Yarn movement becomes structure. Structure becomes surface. Surface becomes recognised as apparel fabric. The precision of that transformation determines the quality of the cloth.

THE PRESIDENT BEHIND THE MACHINE

The human figure is not outside the process, but inside it

One of the most telling images in the mill was not a formal portrait, but TSUGUO’s president, Mr. Watanabe, standing behind the machinery.

There is no front-facing interview pose. The frame is filled with machine, yarn, light, and distance. The image is less a portrait of a person than a record of the relationship between person and machine.

Cloth is not produced by machinery alone. The final quality of apparel fabric is determined by human judgement: reading the yarn, watching the surface, and deciding when to adjust.

INSPECTION

Cloth is not finished the moment it leaves the loom

Woven fabric does not become a finished product immediately after weaving. It is passed through an inspection machine, where light is used to check weaving faults, broken yarns, stains, colour irregularities, width, and length.

Inspection is not clerical work at the end of production. It is the process through which all previous decisions are confirmed as cloth. Yarn preparation, loom adjustment, weaving, and inspection are not separate episodes. Together, they make apparel fabric possible.

PLOTOTYPE FIELD NOTE

I am not looking for factories. I am looking for processes. More precisely, I am looking for the judgement that remains inside them.

What makes TSUGUO compelling is not that it is old. It is that the process from yarn to cloth has not been broken into disconnected fragments.

Why rewind a yarn? Why keep punch cards? Why manage tension? Why inspect the cloth after weaving? These reasons accumulate on the surface of the fabric.

In contemporary fashion, material is often treated as specification: composition, weight, density, finish, origin. But material is not made by specification alone.

It is made by the condition of yarn, the tension of warp, the structure of weave, the habits of machines, the time of a region, the memory of clients, and the judgement of people.

For PLOTOTYPE, to study material is not to look only at a finished surface. It is to read the structure, process, and decisions that made the surface possible.
